Gripsholm castle is located in Mariefred, about 45 minutes southwest of Stockholm, and it is one of ten royal palaces in Sweden. It was built by King Gustav Vasa in 1537.

A castle with well-preserved interiors filled with furniture, ornaments, textiles and works of art enjoyed by several royal dynasties. The unique royal theatre from 1781 remains unchanged and is considered to be one of the castle’s masterpieces.
Gripsholm castle is also the home of Sweden’s National Portrait Gallery featuring prominent individuals from the fifteenth century to the present day with famous Swedes such as Dag Hammarskjöld, Ingmar Bergman and Benny Andersson, composer and former member of ABBA.
The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park on the shores of the lake Mälaren. Nearby is Mariefred and a nature reserve called Hjorthagen where you can find nearly 100 deer roaming the grounds.
